Donegal is blessed with some of Ireland's most dramatic and rewarding landscapes, and tucked away among its quieter corners lies one of its most underrated hikes and that is Lough Salt Mountain. Not as famous as its neighbours Errigal or Muckish, but every bit as rewarding, this is a hike that delivers big views without demanding too much in return.
Getting There & Parking
One of the great things about Lough Salt is how accessible it is. The hike is straightforward to find and easy to get to, making it a brilliant option whether you're a seasoned hiker or just starting out. Parking is limited, especially on weekends or during the summer months. The best place to start is at the viewing point, which itself already offers a taste of the what awaits you above. Make your way over to the Pump House and you will see a small cattle gate, follow it to the second gate and then follow the sheep paths to you reach the top.
The Hike
Lough Salt is a steady, manageable hike that is suitable for most fitness levels. The terrain is rugged in that classic Donegal way, wild, honest, and beautifully raw, but the trail is not overly technical, making it a great choice for families, beginners, or anyone looking for a rewarding hike without a serious challenge. From the viewing point, you can expect to reach the summit in roughly 40-50 minutes, though you may find yourself stopping every few minutes to soak up those views.
The Views From The Top
And then you reach the top and that's where Lough Salt truly earns its place on your Donegal bucket list.
The panoramic views from the top are simply breathtaking. On a clear day you can look out across one of the most iconic landscapes in all of Ireland. Errigal, Donegal's iconic peak, the table like mass of Muckish that dominates to the north. Out across the water, Tory Island & Inishboffin sits like a distant world of its own. You will also see Fanad and the peninsula. On a clear day, you can even make out the Sperrins away in the distance a view that stretches across counties and reminds you just how vast and wild this part of the world truly is.
Below you sits, Lough Salt itself.
Why You Should Hike Lough Salt
Lough Salt won't be found on everyones top list, and in many ways that's exactly what makes it special. It's the kind of place locals cherish and visitors discover with a sense of genuine surprise and delight.
Whether you're visiting Donegal for the first time or you've walked these hills your whole life, Lough Salt is a hike that never gets old and it still remains one of my favorite hikes.
So lace up your boots, pack your Stanley Flask, and head for the top.
For me the best time to enjoy this view is at Sunset, watching the sun say goodnight.
What You Should Pack
Lough Salt may not be the longest or most demanding hike in Donegal, but a little preparation goes a long way. Here's what I'd recommend packing before you head up.
The Essentials Kevin Style First things first. A Stanley flask of hot tea is non-negotiable. Add a few sweets and a pack of biscuits and you've got everything you need to enjoy that view. Simple pleasures, but honestly it will be the best cup of tea you will ever drink.
Footwear Hiking boots are an absolute must. The ground on Lough Salt can be boggy and uneven in places, and a good sturdy pair of boots will make a real difference to your comfort and safety on the way up and down.
Clothing & Weather Donegal weather has a personality of its own, so always pack for every possibility. A warm jumper, a hat, and a reliable raincoat should be in your bag regardless of what the forecast says. The hike itself isn't very long, but up on that mountain the wind and rain can roll in quickly, so it's always better to be prepared than caught out.
Safety First Before you head out, always let someone know where you're going and when you expect to be back. Better still, bring a hiking buddy it makes the journey more enjoyable and means you've always got someone by your side if you need it.
A Note for the Summer Hikes... The Midges! If you're planning this hike during the summer months, do not underestimate the midges. They are absolutely lethal up there and they will find you. Pack midge spray and apply it before you start, trust me on this one, you'll thank me later.
Hiking At Sunset Lough Salt at sunset is a truly magical experience and well worth the effort. However, if you're heading up in the evening, make sure to pack a torch. The light fades fast once the sun drops, and you'll want to make sure you can find your way safely back down.
A little preparation makes for a much better adventure. Now get that flask filled, grab your boots, and get up that mountain...
